Paul Junior High Public Charter School-
Good for Students and the Neighborhood |
A New Kind of Neighborhood School
- All neighborhood kids have the right to attend Paul Junior High public charter
school.
- Paul will still be the neighborhood school - it will just be better.
- DCPS doesn't need the Paul Junior High Building for its academic programs:
within a shirt drive of Paul there are two half-empty middle schools. Around
the District there are millions of square feet of unused DCPS space.
- Both the federal and the local charter school laws permit conversion of
DCPS schools into public charter schools.
- Conversion takes dedication: it took 3 years for Paul Junior High parents
to collect the signatures of 2/3 of the Paul parents and teachers.
- The conversion process was closely monitored by the D.C. Public Charter
School Board, which has an outstanding reputation.
A Gain for Students
- The principal of Paul Junior High, leading the conversion effort, is among
the most admired educators in the city.
- Red tape and resistance from the central administration have impeded Paul's
progress. Becoming a charter school will allow Paul to achieve real excellence.
- Conversion schools in other states have dramatically increased community
involvement and, especially, student achievement.
