Share your story: My Path to College

Friends of Choice in Urban Schools (FOCUS) is now the DC Charter School Alliance!

Please visit www.dccharters.org to learn about our new organization and to see the latest news and information related to DC charter schools.

The FOCUS DC website is online to see historic information, but is not actively updated.

Did you know that about 83% of DC public charter school graduates are accepted into college?  That’s great news. We want to share the successes of public charter school students, teachers and parents. It takes an enormous amount of hard work and commitment to get into college. We’d like to showcase your efforts on the path to reaching this incredible goal.

We’re calling on all our fantastic charter school students, teachers, and parents to help us share stories with the DC community and beyond. Tell us about why more DC public charter school students are attending college than traditional school students.

DC public charter students are receiving the quality education they need to succeed.  Which is important: a college degree is still the best indicator for future success; just recently, the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce confirmed that a college degree remains critical to earning a middle class job.

We want to highlight you (teachers, parents, and scholars) on our website, in our newsletter, and on Facebook and YouTube.   Send any videos, pictures, or stories that you think we could use to mypathtocollege@focusdc.org.

Our suggestions for content are as follows:

  • Students: send us a 3-5 minute video about your college experiences and how your experience as a public charter student prepared you for your collegiate studies (be creative, and be appropriate – the top videos will be featured on our website as well as our YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter accounts);
  • Teachers: submit photos of the graduating seniors as they maneuver through the college application process (be sure to obtain parental consent for any footage); and
  • Parents: write a letter highlighting positive moments involving your student and their public charter school.  We encourage you to write it as if it were for your student, expressing your pride, or for a teacher, showing your appreciation.

Thank you for all your work in giving public charter schools the recognition they deserve.  We can’t wait to see YOUR path to college.
