As we reported on before the holiday break, this school year FOCUS created the Student Data Intern Program, a paid internship designed to help charter schools develop and manage their data systems. FOCUS received 19 applications from schools and was able to provide 12 schools with interns for the 2013-14 school year.  Here’s a look at five more FOCUS interns (be sure to check in next week to learn about our final four interns!)

Xian Huang- The Next Step PCS

Xian Huang is interning at The Next Step PCS in Ward 1. Before joining the FOCUS data internship program, she attended Wuhan University in Wuhan, China where she earned a Bachelor of Economics in Financial Engineering and a Masters in Finance. She is currently pursuing her Master of Science degree in Statistics at George Washington University.

Xian is helping the school’s data team develop more efficient systems for tracking student enrollment and waitlists, and is transferring historical data to a new student information database (SIS). Xian is enjoying working at a school with helpful and cordial staff and is pleasantly surprised by how The Next Step uses its data to inform individualized academic supports for its students. She hopes to help improve these systems so the staff and administrators can use the data more efficiently.

Xian previously worked as an Assistant Investment Advisor at Changjiang Securities and as an intern at The People’s Bank of China, both located in Hubei, China. After graduation Xian hopes to find a job as a data analyst.

Yan Lu at DC Bilingual

Yan is an intern at DC Bilingual PCS. She is currently working on her Master of Science degree in Statistics at the George Washington University. Before coming to GWU, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computing Mathematics with a Minor in TV Editing and Directing at the University of China, and attended the 2011 summer session at New York University where she studied Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences and Research Methods.

At DC Bilingual, Yan organizes and manipulates historical datasets to make it easier for teachers to track their own progress. She is excited to continue putting her previous data experience to good use at DC Bilingual, and to help teachers identify areas of improvement.  Yan looks forward to the daily surprises from students when she comes to work and enjoys the peaceful environment at DC Bilingual.

Before joining the FOCUS data internship program, Yan worked for a film company in Beijing, China where she edited videos and subtitles, and as a Program Director Assistant at Anhui TV Station in Anhui, China. After graduation Yan plans to pursue a career in statistics.

Hope Moffett at E.L. Haynes

Hope is interning at E.L. Haynes PCS in Ward 4 while also pursuing her Master of Business Administration degree at the University of Virginia. Before joining the FOCUS data intern program she earned her Master of Science degree in Education from University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Act degree in Art History and Curator Studies from Brigham Young University.

She is currently creating data trackers for math and reading assessments and working on a DC CAS strand and standard analysis system for E.L Haynes. This system will help teachers identify and compare academic areas of growth and weakness on this standardized test.   Teachers can then use this information to create targeted supports to increase the achievement outcomes of their students.   Hope is excited to continue using her previous teaching experience to help the E.L. Haynes’s data team efficiently use this system to identify and replicate successful teaching strategies.

Before the FOCUS intern program, Hope spent the summer working for E.L. Haynes as an Education Pioneer Fellow. She also taught English and Language Arts in Philadelphia Public Schools and English as a Second Language in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Hope loves traveling and has been to 40 countries on four continents.

Keyu Huang at AppleTree - Central Office

Keyu is interning at AppleTree PCS’s central office while also pursuing her Master of Science (BS) degree in Statistics at George Washington University. Before coming to Washington, DC, Keyu earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at Zhejiang Gongshang University in Hangzhou, China.

Keyu is building a master dataset for the AppleTree network and using a coding mechanism to transfer old data to this new system. She looks forward to helping AppleTree efficiently analyze and identify data trends and developing meaningful ways to use their data. She also enjoys combining her mathematical and computer experience to help resolve data problems as they arise.

Before joining the FOCUS data internship program, Keyu worked as an administrative assistant at Huaxia Bank in Hangzhou, China, where she edited lending survey reports and communicated with customers. She also conducted a performance analysis of 31 capital cities, and an analysis of factors affecting housing in major cities in China.

Victoria Marcavage- Elsie Whitlow Stokes

Victoria is interning at EW Stokes PCS in Ward 5. She is currently pursuing a BS in Marketing at the Catholic University of America. Before joining the FOCUS data internship program, Victoria was a business analyst intern at ReminderMedia.

At Stokes, Victoria is updating the student information systems (SIS), pulling relevant data, and inputting student assessment scores for analysis. She is excited to work in the school environment and to have the opportunity to get involved in the community in which she lives. She is pleasantly surprised by Stokes’ positive environment and how much she enjoys working with the school staff. She wants to help the data team identify weaknesses in the current data system and potential solutions to strengthen the system and improve the educational outcomes of the students.

After graduation she hopes to find a job she loves as much as she enjoys working at EW Stokes. In her free time she likes running, playing softball, snowboarding, and following Philadelphia sports teams.
