Last week, members of the Georgetown University women's basketball team partnered with a campus student group, Georgetown NAACP, to host more than 50 students from KIPP DC: Aim Academy on the Hilltop. The Hoyas connected with the students who were getting a taste of the college atmosphere.

KIPP DC: AIM Acadmy is a public charter school located in Washington, D.C. AIM Academy is replicating and building on the success of its partner school, KIPP DC: KEY Academy, also located in the District. KEY Academy has had remarkable results on its standardized test scores and in placing its alumni in high performing high schools.

The mission of KIPP DC: AIM Academy is to instill students with the academic skills and character necessary to succeed in high school, college and life. The staff believes that all students can learn and that there are no shortcuts to success in life. AIM Academy believes in holding students to high expectations and accepts no excuses.

Five players and a manager led groups of six to seven KIPP students around campus for a tour of Georgetown, as well as a scavenger hunt in an effort to raise the students' awareness about opportunities in college. At the conclusion of the tours, sophomore guard Jasmine Jackson (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) spoke to students about the life of a collegiate student-athlete.

"It was nice to be able to talk to kids that come from similar backgrounds that I come from. I enjoyed putting a smile on their faces and being an inspiration."

The event was a learning experience for both KIPP and Georgetown student-athletes.

Women's basketball manager Deborah Williams, who is also the president of the Georgetown NAACP Chapter and helped coordinate this event summed up the day.

"This was a great opportunity because it gave the team a chance to connect with students in the greater DMV community and the Georgetown community. I also think it was great because the players learned just a much from the KIPP students as they learned from them."
